11/07/2003 Entry: "Wanna hear something terrible?"

Last night, I got home about 7:30 after teaching my "Internet for Seniors" class. I had to get my DJ gear out of the garage, and into the truck. Between the door of the garage and the gear were a few bags of trash. So I decided to put the trash in the truck (not the gear), take my CD bins inside to fill with, um, CDs. Then, today I would go to the Rockland Tranfer Station (i.e. the dump), empty the truck of trash, and then fill the empty space with DJ gear on my lunch break.

So, I filled the truck up last night. I took the CD boxes inside. I went to bed. I woke up. I got dressed. I went outside to go to work. The back of my truck was still wide open! I'd left it open all night. Behind the trash was Big Pink the pink sparkle drum set, and two bags worth of brass (what non-drummers call cymbals). Total value of all that? Close to a grand. And I left it unlocked with the doors wide open, and went to bed! They sat there, free for the taking, overnight.

Thank God (and the trash) everything was still there this morning.

For all the crap it gets Rockland is really a pretty safe town. To hear some people talk you would think it was the South Bronx. I can't tell you how many times stuff has gotten left out at my house or the garage left open all night by accident. Nothing ever taken. I think my father rarely remembers to close his truck windows. Sure stuff has been stolen but it is very rare.

I actually did take everything, but put it all back, including the rubbish, when I was finished using it.

I just read my response and it sounds rather silly the way I wrote it. Nothing is ever taken but sure some stuff has been taken. '

Let me clarify. Over the years things have been stolen from the neighborhood and property. Not much though. It is a rare occurance.

Nothing has ever been taken from accidentially leaving stuff open (like the garage door) or leaving things out that normally get put away (like the lawn mower or tools).

There are a lot of "nice" neighborhoods in other parts of the country where anything that gets left out is guaranteed to be taken. So by that token Rockland is pretty nice.
