12/06/2003 Entry: "Tama Bell Brass Snare"

Yummy! This is a definite dream snare. Tama still makes a bell brass snare, but it looks more generic than the older model. It got me thinking about what seperates brass from bell brass? Why does a bell brass snare cost $1,200, while the same snare in plain brass would cost $300? So, I called my favorite Australian metal-fabricator Jim Gilbert. He wasn't familiar with the term "bell brass." Seems it's mostly found in musical instruments, and since he's a shipfitter, he probably doesn't use it much. But he guessed it was just a very high quality brass, probably with some additives in it to help corrosion. I've searched the web, but haven't found a definitive answer yet.
