05/07/2002 Entry: "Beer Update #5"

So it's been a while since my last beer update. But here it is, number 5! You may remember, that for my birthday, Jim bought me a very nice gift basket of 8 premium beers. As I drink each one, I do a little write up. Well, 5 of 8 is gone, and let me say that Pilsner Urquell is one of the best Pilsners I've ever had. And well it should be: the brewery in Pilsn, Czech invented it! (I was surprized to learn that Pilsner was the newest recognized style of beer, "invented" in 1842.) This was a good beer. A little sweet at first taste, with lots of fizz and bubbles. Quite crisp. On the swallow, there is a bitterness that I've not encountered with beer before, but have with coffee and wine. Sometimes, the acid in wine and coffee will leave a very dry finish in your mouth. Almost like you wiped the inside of your mouth with a paper towel. You kind of smack your cheeks and roll your tounge. Well, this beer gave me the same kind of reaction. Of course, as your mouth is dry, you just have to take another sip!

Sum total of beers drunk: 5. Left to drink: 3. (A Bellhave Scotch Ale, a Sam Smith's Oatmeal Stout, and some other Eastern European lager in a hugebottle.) At this rate, I should be done by August!
