01/09/2008 Entry: "Cell Phones and Restaurants"

What's worse than a cell phone ringing in a restaurant? Someone who answers it at the table! No joke, I'm eating lunch with JP and Snake today. Twice, I hear cell phones rings, twice people answer at their table, zero times does any one excuse themselves and make their call somewhere more private. So I'm thinking to myself "This has the makings of a post," and what happens? Snake's cell phone rings! What's he do? Answer it! The punk.

Replies: 4 people have rocked the mic!

Someone once stated that when you are spending time with another person regardless if it is for pleasure or business, if your cell phone rings and you interrupt your time with them to answer it....
What you are really saying is - This is more important than you.

So before you get into the habit of automatically answering your phone, you should 1st ask yourself what is the message I want to send to the person I am with?

What ever happened to letting people leave a message? sleepy

This is a huge pet peeve of mine. If you are eating out your phone should be on vibrate and if you MUST answer it leave the table. URG

Guilty! Whenever my cell phone rings, it is usually an emergency. I answer it at the table, in the shower, in the car, wherever. If it is more than a yes or no answer, I leave the table or the meeting. Are you totally ashamed of me? Love you. blush

If I were eating lunch with the director of a chapter of the Red Cross, and their phone rang, I'd have no problem with them answering it. The same is true for a sys/admin of an Internet company, or a doctor, or what have you. I would hope, though, that as they're picking up their phone, their pushing their chair back, and headed for a quiet spot away from everyone else. It's the answering at the table that irks me, not so much that the phone got answered.
