Today's new tune

And since I'm so hip with my zoot suit and all, I decided to put a real zinger of a hip tune up for you all to download. Here is a great jazzer, Dave Frishberg, with his tuene "I'm Hip."

Hits, a quiz, and whatever

I got a hit from Bar Napkins. I can't find a link on their page to me, but it showed up in my logs. Anyway, I'll link back to them, and provide them a huge new traffic stream.

Ron from Random Abstract was explaining that last night on The Man Show, the hosts offered $100 to each pair of girls who would kiss each other. I asked Ron "Was this a kiss. Or a kiss?" Well ,it seems it was a kiss of the French variety. So here's an informal poll. Would you, for $100, Frenh kiss someone of the same sex? Would you, for $100, touch someone's hoo-hoo of the same sex. If it were me, I'd sooner do B than A. Ron says he'd do A faster, as the tongue isn't a sex organ. Sex organ or not, it's a very personal organ, and I don't want to be sharring mine with just anyone.

Talkin' like a hepster

Hey, if you wanna be a real gas, you know, a real big leaguer, you gotta have the dialect down. Ring-a-ding-ding! So, if I'm going to get in there with my new zoot, I have to learn what's here and here. It'll be a real gas... A clambake, baby. Say goodnight, Charlie!

Zoot Suit and Rush Limbaugh

The zoot suit arrived yesterday. It looks pretty cool. I still need suspenders, shoes, and a hat, and then I'll be ready to roll. The plan is to wear it to my gig at The Black Bull next Friday nite.

I sent a letter to Rush Limbaugh today. Yesterday, he had been talking about a report that John Travolta bought his own 747. Then today, Rush mentions that John's publicist said that Mr. Travolta has never had a 747, and has never considered owning one. Well, that's true. But, if you had been reading Random Abstract last fall, you would have known John bought a 707! So, I sent Mr. Limbaugh an email, pointing him to Ron's site, and to the many sites that mention his 707.

Hop-A-Thon

Julia's school participated in a hop-a-thon for Muscular Distrophy. (Sorry, guys at the office! I told you the wrong charity!) Anyway, thanks to the guys at the office who donated to the hop-a-thon. Julia hopped 127 times. I don't know that I could do that! But boy, did she take a good nap this afternoon!

New Snare, and Whisky!

I forgot to mention... A few weeks ago, I played a gig at The Sudbury Inn. I decided to take my Tama Starclassic snare. It needed a new head, so I bought one at Northern Kingdom, the greatest music store in the world. (Off topic: See who comes up #3 on google when searching for "greatest music store in the world.") Anyway, when I was changing the head, I notices that some of the wood layers were pulling apart. It was sent back to Tama one week ago Friday. Today, a brand new replacement showed up. I should pick it up tomorrow.

On Saturday, I help my neighboor move some furniture. Nothing major: a big photo copier, a desk, and a file cabinet. It took an hour and a half, all told. He bought me a little something for my trouble. It was really no trouble at all. But, he was very nice, don't you think?

Zoot suit purchased!

You may have noticed the purple zoot suit went to about $70. Too rich for my blood. So instead, I snagged this grey pinstripe zoot for the minimum bid. With a grey suit, I can wear any outrageous tie I like. Purple would have been a bit more limiting. Still, if another purple one comes up for bid...

An update for the fans

I know, I know. It's been a couple of days without an update. Hey, I'm a busy man! I'm taking the day off. At this time (about 11:30 am), I've already put a load of dishes through the washer, swept the kitchen floor, hand washed the other dishes, put a loaf of bread in the bread machine, and volunteered for an hour at the Red Cross in Rockland. At noon, Julia and I are going for lunch.

Note to the Bagman: You link to TU, but he doesn't link back to you. We here at TRAA do link back tou you, but I don't see my button on your page anywhere. Let's get that fixed up, ok?

Tama Koa drumset

You wanna see an incredible drumkit. Check out this Tama kit. It has Hawaiian Koa on the in and outside, and bubinga (BUBINGA!!!) on the inside, with a real abalone inlay. First, I wanna know why you would take a bubinga (BUBINGA!!!) drum, and cover it. I mean, it's koa, but on top of bubinga (BUBINGA!!!)??? Also, I HATE the inlay. It really ruins the look of the drums, I think. Ditch that, and presto! you've got a great instrument. I think Harvey of Greatest-Music-Store-In-The-World (i.e. Northern Kingdom Music in Rockport Maine) told me their were only 40 kits produced; they've all been sold.

For My Sister: Carl Sandburg

Some Carl Sandburg, for my Sister.

FOG

THE fog comes
on little cat feet.

It sits looking
over harbor and city
on silent haunches
and then moves on.

And then, one of my favorites, one of his war poems.

GRASS

Pile the bodies high at Austerlitz and Waterloo.
Shovel them under and let me work--
I am the grass; I cover all.

And pile them high at Gettysburg
And pile them high at Ypres and Verdun.
Shovel them under and let me work.
Two years, ten years, and the passengers ask the conductor:
What place is this?
Where are we now?

I am the grass.
Let me work.

In Just- Spring

in Just-
spring when the world is mud-
luscious the little
lame balloonman

whistles far and wee

and eddieandbill come
running from marbles and
piracies and it's
spring

when the world is puddle-wonderful

the queer
old balloonman whistles
far and wee
and bettyandisbel come dancing

from hop-scotch and jump-rope and

it's
spring
and
the

goat-footed

balloonMan whistles
far
and

Happy Birthday!

I almost forgot! BillyRhythm.com is 1 year old today! Here was my first post with my new domain name:

"Ring a ding ding! BillyRhythm.com is now happening! (Of course, there is nothing there yet.) But soon I will be on my own dedicated web-server, throwing out bandwith hand over fist. I'll be runnin' some scripts, loadin' some stats, and giving away email addresses @billyrhythm.com. Now the only hitch: how to get people to remember how to spell "rhythm." Anyone have a good pneumonic device?
How about:

R-rhythm
H-hates
Y-you
T-The
H-hosebag
M-Man"

Which poet am I?

You are e.e. cummings
Your use of the English language is not bound to any grammatical or even logical standards. You live your life with rhythym and passion and find yourself constantly searching for meaning by traveling or in new relationships.

Take the Which Poet are You? Quiz - brought to you out of boredom and pretention!

I actually scored equally among 3 poets: Alfred Lord Tennyson, ee, and (gasp) Mya Angeloo (?)! I'll pick ee, thank you! Or better...

ill pic(k) ee thankyouverymuch (!)

Blues and the Melancholy Sadness

It's been a long week for B.R. You see, I've been working on these tradeshows for my employer. (I'm a P/R man for you new visitors.) I've had a little stress, shall we say. This weekend, I play a gig Friday nite, another tradeshow Saturday until 6pm, another gig Saturday nite, and back to the tradeshow Sunday. Billing day is Monday. I think I may take Tuesday off.

Anyway, I was asked to take a drive to pick up The Wop. (He had a little driving incident, and the State of Maine thought he should rest from driving for a while.) I convinced the powers that be to let me drive the Viggen. (The Viggen's for lease. Email for details.) It's about 50 degrees out, I'm driving a fantastic machine (not to fast, but not the speed limit either!), listening to good tunes, and it starts to make my melancholy feel a little better. I thought about not stopping in Damariscotta, and instead driving until I ran out of road.

But I stoppped...

I would have liked to have kept going...

Mail Trials

So, that script I was trying to install to email people didn't work. I mentioned you should notice nothing. Well, nothing other than a bunch of posts that say nothing!

I was reading my old posts from last year. You know what they dealt with? "Bought a drum," "working on my page," and "Spam and eggs for dinner." About the same as it is now. Last night for dinner: two eggs, ham, potato pancakes, and toast. About the same as last year!

Don't forget: The Jazz Workshop will be broadcasting tonight on WRFR.

I shredded more than pork tonight! New stuff added to the page. Wanna get Billy Rhythm's posts via email? Put your email addy in the box below. (It's a little something I stole from Biz Stone, Genius.)

Man, using Greymatter will give you one small problem. If you copy HTML into the wrong box, and publish--there's no "undo" feature. Make sure you back up all your entry log files!

Dinner and a LAN party

Tonight's dinner: BBQ Pork Enchilladas. I got the idea from Market on Main. Did I use a recipie? Heck no! I can cook, baby! And man, were they good! The pan held about 15 enchilladas, so I thought I would take some to work for Snake to try. (He loves them too.) Oh well, they're too good to share.

After work, Adam and Ron stayed a little late so we could play some Quake 3. It was awesome! I can only imagine how fun a real LAN party (complete with pizzza, beer, and a dozen people) would be. I hope the guys will continue to wanna play. I think they're going to stay late and play tomorrow night. I have to teach an advanced email class.

Sspeaking of that... 2 years ago, the local adult ed tried to give an advanced email class. There wasn't enough interest. Last year, they asked me to teach it. I had 3 students. This year, I have 8! (The room only holds 10.) Are more people interested in email? Maybe the cat's outta the bag: Billy Rhythm teaches a fun class. Who knows.

Snares and Chilli

Another Tama rosewood. A piccolo. Desired, but not coveted. :-)

Supper tonight was a fantastic new chilli recipie that Sue made. It was crock-potting (is that a verb?) at lunch time, and it smelled great. It tasted as good. Highly reccomended.

No Scratch = No Drums!

It's funny. Now that I've had my little snare drum buying spree, (in which I bought a Stewart Copeland and Pearl Mahogany snare) 2 drums have come up on ebay. Not only was there that Tama Rosewood snare, but also Ludwig Cocktail drum. A similar drum sold on ebay a couple of weeks ago for about $600. Just over 2 bills is a really good deal.

Northern Kingdom Music, Rockport Maine. The best music store in the world!

The other day, my buddy Harv at Northern Kingdom Music (read: the hot dangdest music store that God ever graced the world with) gave me an old Yamaha bass pedal. It needed a little work. Well, I had an old back up pedal, and I shanghai'd some parts from that, and put me together a nice little pedal. It will be my new backup. And what will I do with the old back up? I think I'll give it to my drum student. He's the one that bought my Red Ludwig Vistalite set, and that pedal was none too hot. So Harv loves me, and I pass the love along. And that's what it's all about: musicians lovin' each other, in the non-Biblical sense.
